Our responsibilities

Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian was established in 1958. It is one of the earliest and largest acupuncture research institutions in China. After several generations of inheritance and innovation, it is now the national key (cultivation) discipline construction unit of acupuncture and tuina, the chief scientist unit of the National 973 Program, the leader and construction unit of the Shanghai key discipline of acupuncture and tuina. It has a professional and technical team of acupuncture and moxibustion with strong ability in the clinic, teaching and scientific research.

Our major responsibilities are as follows: 1) Make full use of modern scientific knowledge and methods to study the laws and mechanisms of acupuncture and moxibustion in clinical treatment. 2) To sort out and summarize the ancient and modern literature of acupuncture and moxibustion for the clinical and scientific research of acupuncture and moxibustion.

The institute is consist of Acupuncture and Immunity Laboratory, Acupuncture Neurobiology Laboratory, Acupuncture Literature Laboratory and Editorial Department of "Shanghai Journal of Acupuncture and Moxibustion" / "Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science", and out-patient department of Acupuncture. We also have the Key Laboratory of Immune Effect of Acupuncture of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and three third-level laboratories of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture and Immunity Laboratory, Molecular Biology Laboratory of Acupuncture, and Brain Neurobiology Laboratory). Prof. Wu Huangan is the vice president of Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion Association and the president of Shanghai Acupuncture and Moxibustion Association.


Our achievements

Since 2001, our institute has undertaken 2 National 973 Programs of moxibustion projects (Chief Scientist Wu Huangan, excellent acceptance by the Ministry of Science and Technology), completed 78 funds from National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 160 provincial and ministerial-level projects. In recent years, the number of scientific awards is staying at a high level. We won more than 70 awards in various scientific and technological projects, including a second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award (2013), 2 first prizes of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award (2012 and 2017), 2 first prizes of Science and Technology Progress Award of Ministry of National Education(2012,2019), and a second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of International Contribution Award of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2019). We have published 1,036 academic papers (over 150 articles were included in SCI), and obtained 51 authorized patents, including 13 invention patents. One of our researchers has won the Young Female Scientist Award of China, one has won the Chinese Youth Science and Technology Award, one of us has won the first prize of the Shanghai health system "Silver Snake award" and two have won the second prizes. More than 40 researchers were listed in talent programs at all levels, including Hundreds of Outstanding Scientists, Qihuang Scholars of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Young Qihuang Scholars, New Century Hundreds of Outstanding Scientists of Ministry of Education, Shanghai Leading Talents, Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leaders, Shanghai Young Top Talents, Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Venus, Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Talents Sailing Program, Shanghai Dawn Program, Shanghai Municipal Health System Outstanding Discipline Leaders, Shanghai Medical Leading Talents, and Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Leading Talents. The institute has trained more than 80 PhD, more than 160 masters and 5 post-doctoral fellows in acupuncture and moxibustion.


Our ongoing activities

Our institution is in a leading position in the field of acupuncture and immunity in China. Over the years, we have been dedicated to the optimization of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of immune-related diseases. Based on the 2 national 973 programs of moxibustion projects, we have carried out and completed the study on technique and program optimization of moxibustion for immune-related diseases, including ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, hashimoto's thyroiditis, chronic atrophic gastritis. Focusing on these diseases, the basic research on the immune effect and the neuro-immune regulation of acupuncture and moxibustion were carried out.

Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and meridian has established an outpatient department since 1959. In the clinic, Acupuncture is mainly combined with Chinese and Western medicine and modern acupuncture instruments, and comprehensive treatments are applied to ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic urinary dysfunction (urethral syndrome, urinary incontinence), tinnitus and deafness, dry eye syndrome, myopia, Parkinson's disease, cerebral atrophy, cervical and lumbar diseases, obesity, sequelae of stroke, etc.

Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridiani pays attention to acupuncture and moxibustion academic inheritance research. "Lu's Acupuncture Therapy" was listed as "Shanghai intangible cultural heritage project” in 2009, and was listed as "National intangible cultural heritage project” in 2011. In 2012, it was established as the branch base of "Lu’s Acupuncture" of Traditional Chinese medicine school heritage research, which was turned to be the protection unit of the national intangible cultural heritage representative project "Acupuncture (Lu’s Acupuncture Therapy)".


Our ongoing activities

Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian has advanced scientific research equipment, excellent scientific research team and diversified scientific research direction. It focus on the study of acupuncture and immunity, the substantial basis of acupuncture effect, neurophysiology of acupuncture and moxibustion, the principle and application of moxibustion, acupuncture literature, and acupuncture on ENT diseases etc to strengthen the clinical and application research and to promote the construction of acupuncture and moxibustion. Meanwhile, we’d like to improve the quality of outpatient service, highlight the specialty and special disease brand of acupuncture and moxibustion to create characteristics of outpatient service. We’ll also keep trying to improve the quality, influence and popularity of "Shanghai Journal of Acupuncture and Moxibustion" and "Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science" (English edition).
