The Institute of Liver Diseases was established in 1997 and has become the important components of: Attached Institution of Chinese Traditional Medicine (TCM) Internal Medicine, Key Disciplines of the Ministry of Education; Key Laboratory of Liver and Kidney Diseases (Shanghai University of TCM), Ministry of Education; Key Clinical Department of National Health Commission; Key Laboratory of TCM Liver Diseases, National Administration of TCM; Key Laboratory of Cell and Molecular Biology, National Administration of TCM; Key Laboratory of Chronic Liver Diseases, National Administration of TCM; National Clinical Research Center of TCM (Liver Diseases) and Shanghai Clinical Key Laboratory of TCM.

Main Responsibilities

1. To carry out clinical and basic research of TCM and integrated Chinese and Western medicine according to the clinical problems and needs of liver diseases, in order to improve curative effect, clarify the mechanism and promote the discipline development.

2. To carry out clinical diagnosis and treatment of common liver diseases, develop new technologies and new business constantly to improve the diagnosis and treatment level of difficult and complicated liver diseases

3. To establish and manage the platform of clinical and basic research, recruit graduate students and visiting scholars, conduct post-doctoral stations and other collaborations, to cultivate high-level professionals in discipline.


Our achievements

The institute adheres to the innovation and preservation of TCM, takes the improvement of clinical efficacy as the purpose, takes the modernization and internationalization of TCM as the duty, and takes the establishment of first-class and international famous liver disease research structure as the goal. We are committed to the clinical and fundamental research of chronic liver diseases prevention and cure with TCM, and play an important role in the prevention and cure of chronic liver disease and hepatic injury with Chinese herb medicine.   

Since 1997, we have undertaken the following projects: 4 major projects including the National Key Scientific and Technological Projects in the 8th Five-Year Plan, the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) and the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program); 6 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China including the National Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholars, major programs and key programs; 10 projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology including the major special projects and international cooperation projects.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has undertaken a total of 4 projects, including the 8th five-year plan for key scientific and technological research, the 973 and 863 Program Projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Outstanding Youth Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 6 major projects and key issues, and 10 of the Ministry of Science and technology.

By 2021, we have won 24 prizes, which were of the national, ministerial and provincial class. Meanwhile, more than 1200 papers have been published, of which more than 180 were included in SCI journals. We have been granted 24 patents, 5 of which have achieved the commercial transformation. In particular, Fuzheng Huayu tablet or capsule (FZHY), as the novel anti-liver fibrosis Chinese medicine, has been widely used worldwide.

We have cultivated 303 graduate students, including 122 doctoral students, and 21 post-doctoral fellows have completed their scientific research work. 10 persons have won the title of Shanghai Outstanding Graduate, and many graduate students and post-doctoral fellows became the leaders of academic and clinical institutions at home and abroad.

Every year, the outpatient amount is more than 60,000, and more than 2,000 people are discharged from hospital. Multi-disciplinary diagnosis of difficult liver histopathology and multi-disciplinary diagnosis and treatment of portal hypertension, refractory ascites, liver cancer were carried out. In addition, special disease clinics for liver cirrhosis, fatty liver, liver injury of Chinese herbal medicine were set up. We have taken the lead or participated in formulating 12 guidance for industry or common suggestions.


Ongoing Activities

  1. Establishment, optimization and application of the diagnosis and treatment scheme by integrated Chinese and Western medicine for chronic liver diseases, including various etiologies of hepatitis, cirrhosis, portal hypertension and their complications. Moreover, research and development of novel Chinese medicine and its mechanism of action.  

  2. Diagnosis and treatment by integrated Chinese and Western medicine, secondary and tertiary prevention and mechanism research of liver malignant tumor

  3. Explore the effective scheme of integrated Chinese and Western medicine, the characteristics and biomarkers of the effective population with TCM, and improve the level of precision treatment.

  4. The clinical and fundamental research on the prevention and cure of the fibrosis in liver, lungs, kidneys and other organs with TCM.

  5. Optimize the clinical prediction and early warning system of liver injury of Chinese herbal medicine, discover the characteristics, mechanism and precautions of liver injury with Chinese herbal medicine, to improve the clinical safe medication level of TCM.  


Our staff

The institute consists of 3 departments, including Fundamental Laboratory, 2nd Department of Hepatology (Depart. Liver Cirrhosis) and Clinical Key Laboratory of TCM. There are 32 staff members in total, who are the members of Chinese Communist Party in 6th Branch of Internal Medicine Department, Shuguang Hospital. There are institute director, director, deputy institute director, deputy director, branch secretary, and 2 branch committee members. There are 7 doctoral supervisors, 3 of which are part-time. Generally speaking, about 18 master or doctoral postgraduates and 2 post doctors are recruited each year.
