Our responsibilities

Spine Institute was founded in 2003. Our major responsibilities are as follows:

  1. To study the etiology and pathogenesis of chronic musculoskeletal diseases.

  2. To explore new Chinese medicine diagnosis methods and treatments for chronic musculoskeletal diseases.

  3. To improve the theoretical innovation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and provide a technical support system and a collaborative innovation platform for the study of "Theory and Treatment of Muscles and Bones".


Our achievements

In the past 5 years, we have undertaken 151 longitudinal projects (including 52 national projects and 34 provincial and ministerial projects), 5 crosswise projects, and the approved contract funds were more than 150 million RMB.

In terms of science and technology awards, we have won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award, the second prize of China Medical Science and Technology Award, the silver prize of China International Industry Expo, the second prize of Science and Technology Award of China Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and other awards.

In terms of team construction awards, we have won the awards of the Innovation Team in Key Fields of the Ministry of Science and Technology (prevention and treatment of senile diseases with TCM), the first batch of "Huang Danian Style Teacher Team" among universities and colleges across the country (Bone Health Service Teachers Team), the "Strategic Innovation Team" for the construction of high-level local universities in Shanghai (theoretical innovation research and clinical practice of "kidney viscera-state" in TCM), and the "Top Advantage Innovation Team" for the peak plateau discipline construction of Shanghai (innovative research on the prevention and treatment of bone immune and bone tumor diseases in TCM), successfully achieved the acceptance of "Key Diseases (cervical spondylosis and osteoporosis) of National Clinical Research Base of TCM", and won the first place in the evaluation of prevention and treatment of single disease.


Our ongoing activities

  1. Application and basic research of TCM in the prevention and treatment of spinal musculoskeletal diseases (cervical and lumbar degenerative diseases), bone and joint diseases (bone metabolism diseases, chronic diseases of kidney essence deficiency), bone tumor and other bone inflammation associated diseases.

  2. Deepen the theoretical research on "Kidney Essence", and apply the "Kidney Essence" theory to the research on the prevention and treatment of "kidney-bone-marrow-brain" diseases, and study the mechanisms of "kidney-tonifying" TCM.

  3. We also undertake the teaching tasks of 2 undergraduate courses and 2 postgraduate courses, and 6 teaching reform projects in Shanghai University of TCM.


Our staff

Honorary director of Spine Institute:

Professor Shi Qi, National Chinese Medical Science Master, tenured professor of Shanghai University of TCM, was the first director of Spine Institute.

Professor Wang Yongjun, vice president of Shanghai University of TCM, director of Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education of Theory and Therapy of muscles and bones, Distinguished Young Scholar of National Science Foundation, chief scientist of National High Technology Research and Development Program of China, was the second director of Spine Institute.

Director of Spine Institute:

Professor Liang Qianqian, Excellent Young Scholar of National Science Foundation, "Youth Qihuang Scholar" of the State Administration of TCM, Shanghai Scientific and Technological Youth Talent, Shanghai Medical Leading Talent, "Dawn Scholar" of the Shanghai Education Commission.


Forty-six researchers make a fixed lineup for the institute (14 with senior titles, 11 with deputy senior titles and 17 with intermediate titles). Among them, 19 researchers served as master and doctoral supervisors, 8 researchers served as principle investigator (PI).
