Our responsibilities

The Clinical Research Institute of Integrative Medicine was founded in 2009. Our major responsibilities are as follows:

1. Focusing on disease-oriented research, the professional research team is primarily dedicated to performing sustainable clinical, basic and translational research to address the mechanisms associated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)-guided prevention and treatment of complex diseases including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders and retinal degenerative diseases as well as the clinical value of acupuncture anesthesia.

2. Our research team provides support to physician scientists who are interested in performing related biomedical research.

3. We conduct high-quality graduate training for the next generation biomedical researchers in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

Our achievements

The laboratory-based research team at the Clinical Research Institute of Integrative Medicine was established in 2010. We have since developed three major research units including Clinical and Molecular Medicine Unit, Clinical and Molecular Pharmacology Unit, and Acupuncture Anesthesia Unit. We’ve also established a comprehensive biomedical research capacity, which enables the researchers to carry out pathological, cellular and molecular biological studies on their own. We have chaired the key discipline of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine funded by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We have been a participating member of the key discipline of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and of the Shanghai Plateau Program. Over 62 talent programs and scientific research projects have been awarded to our professional research team over the past 11 years, including the Program for Professor of Special Appointment (Eastern Scholar) at Shanghai Institutions of Higher Learning, Program of Shanghai Academic/Technology Research Leader, Pujiang Talent Program, Shuguang Scholar Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. More than 120 research papers have been published with the research team members owning the first and/or corresponding authorship. Among these publications, 41 were published in SCI journals, including high profile journals such as Science Signaling (cover article), Journal of Clinical Investigation, Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Angiogenesis, International Journal of Cardiology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Annual Review of Pharmacology & Toxicology. The research team has received 7 awards, including Science and Technology Award of Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine (2013, 1st prize), Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award (2013, 2nd prize), Science and Technology Award of Shanghai Association of Chinese Integrative Medicine (2016, 2018, 2020, 1st prize), Shanghai TCM Science and Technology Award (2019, 1st prize), and Science and Technology Award of Shanghai Association of Chinese Integrative Medicine (2021). We have received 9 authorized Chinese invention patents.

Our ongoing activities

In addition to a continued research focus on elucidating the mechanisms of cardiovascular, metabolic, neurodegenerative diseases, etc., we are actively probing the mechanisms associated with the therapeutic effects of TCM in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. We are also carrying out clinical and basic research on acupuncture anesthesia.

Our staff

We have 10 registered members on staff. Dr. Teng Zhang is currently the director and Dr. Ke Wang is the vice-director of the institute. The professional research members have the educational and research background in traditional Chinese medicine, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, biology, Chinese materia medica and acupuncture. Six members hold doctorate degree, two members hold master degree and two members hold bachelor degree. We have 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 2 research associates and 3 research assistants on the research team.
