Our responsibilities

The Institute of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine (IECCM) of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) / Shanghai Academy of TCM, founded in 2021, dedicates to the basic research and application of TCM, emergency and critical care medicine based on the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine and disaster medicine.


Our achievements

We have received over 10 Science and Technology awards, including the first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award and the first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Popularization Award. We have undertaken over 20 Science and Technology programs, including the National Key R&D Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Major New Drug Innovation and Development Program. We also participated in drafting 2 TCM standards for National Administration of TCM, 16 expert consensuses on clinical diagnosis and treatment such as China National Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for COVID-19 Patients.

We have published over 400 papers on domestic and international academic journals including the international renown medical journal Critical Care Medicine. In particular, the article titled Traditional Chinese medicine shenhuang granule in patients with severe/critical COVID-19: A randomized controlled multicenter trial published in Phytomedicine provides empirical evidences for treating severe COVID-19 with TCM.The article is the first evidence-based medicine study on using TCM to treat severe cases of COVID-19 published in an international authoritative journal.


Our ongoing activities

Based on the National Regional Diagnosis and Treatment Center, national key clinical specialties and key disciplines recognized by National Administration of TCM, we are following the requirements of setting up a national medical center, a national clinical medical research center, and a national TCM emergency medical rescue base for

  • Building IECCM into a peak of R&D, a base for the commercialization of R&D achievements and talents training, and a center for international exchange and cooperation on TCM, emergency and critical care medicine based on the integration of Chinese and Western medicine and disaster medicine.

  • Establishing and improving the mechanism of developing, translating, and industrializing national medical innovation achievements of TCM and the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine in treating emergency and critical care illness.

  • Aiming at the R&D and application of key technologies for dealing with TCM emergency and critical care illness, and major epidemics with quick medical response.

  • Building a world-class research center of TCM, emergency and critical care medicine based on the integration of Chinese and Western medicine and disaster medicine.


Our staff

Prof. Fang Bangjiang is the first director of the Institute, who is an outstanding professor in the field of emergency and critical care medicine with the titles of the QiHuang Scholar (national leading talent in TCM), the Changjiang Distinguished Professor of Ministry of Education of China, and the chief scientist of the National Key Research and Development Program of China. The institute has formed a sustainable academic research team with talents at all levels, such as TCM Masters, prominent TCM experts of Shanghai, Changjiang Scholars, QiHuang Scholars, Shanghai Leading Talents, and the researchers of Yangfan Program.
