New Progress in Transdermal Aconitine Administration by SHUTCM Researchers

Time:2015-01-09Hits:146

Recently,Prof. Feng Nianping’s research team at SHUTCM published an academic papertitled Solid Lipid NanoparticlesFormulated for Transdermal Aconitine Administration and Evaluated In Vitro andIn Vivo in the Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology (J Biomed Nano Technol. 2015; 11: 351-361) (IF: 7.578). This study opened a new perspective to allow ‘efficacy-reinforcing and toxicity-reducing’ of poisonous Chinese materia medica through nanotechnology.

Aconite rootherbs are extensively used in clinical practice for their strong analgesic effect. However, it has a narrow therapeutic window due to its toxicity. Associate professor Zhang Yongtai and other researchers used thermal microemulsion toprepare solid lipid nanoparticles of aconite. This can accelerate thetransdermal absorption of the drug, achieve sustained release and remarkably improve its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

The research team of Prof. Feng Nianping has conducted in-depth studies on mechanism of solidlipid Nano carriers and acceleration in transdermal absorption of drugs. Todate, Prof. Feng and his team has published more than 10 research papers in SCI included journals, such as the International Journal of Nanomedicine, International Journal of Pharmaceutics and Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

In addition, the research team has also conducted clinical cooperation with the research team of Prof. Liu Chenghai at the Center for Liver Diseases, Shuguang Hospital.Their joint research product--the umbilicus patch for ascites due to livercirrhosis, has now entered phase-2 clinical trial.

Studies ontransdermal administration of Chinese medicine have been founded by the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Municipal Government, Shanghai Science &Technology Commission, National Natural Science Foundation and Connation Construction Project for Shanghai Higher-Learning Institutions.
